Advantages of soft capsules

Differences in the presentation of hard and soft capsules

 

Unlike hard capsules, soft capsules are not based on prefabricated parts. They are manufactured in a single production step with the filling. The biggest advantage of these soft gel capsules is that they enable the precise oral release of poorly water-soluble and water-insoluble active ingredients. This allows suspensions, emulsions, solutions or pastes to be safely enclosed.

Soft gelatine capsules ensure that the body can absorb the ingredients quickly. This can also have a positive effect on bioavailability (this can also be achieved by adding solubilizing substances). Other dosage forms such as hard capsules or coated tablets, on the other hand, must first be dissolved in the digestive tract before the active ingredients are available to the body. The respective distribution coefficients also play a role here.

Soft gelatine capsules as a vegan alternative

 

Many people prefer vegan preparations that do not contain animal material. Soft capsules are therefore generally based on gelatine. However, the capsule shell can also be made using plant-based raw materials such as modified starch and gluco- and galactomannans. The thermoplastic polyvinyl acid (PVA) can also be used to form a capsule shell.
